We Are the Champions — We Cleared the Egress Routes!

Our goal was to clear NRG’s two egress routes in preparation for the wildfire season. Thanks to 20 hardworking volunteers, generous donors, and neighbors with equipment and expertise, we accomplished even more than planned. And we all loved having the kids and teens join us!

Here’s what we completed:

  • Filled dozens of potholes and mini-craters on the Chaminade path — Rick Duckart

  • Masticated the dirt path between Felicidad and Chaminade — Matthew and Michaline Todd

  • Mowed the Felicidad field and Chardonnay path to Yardarm — Frank Locatelli

  • Weed whacked and limbed branches at all three one-lane road areas on NRG — John Nadler and Rob D’Arcy

  • Cleared Amigo to Felicidad — Randy Nolan, Juani Ferraras, Teresa Locatelli, Frank Locatelli, Marika Riggs, Carla Hill, Cody Hill, and Violet Hill

  • Picked up branch piles and hauled truckloads to the dumpster — Gary, Tenzin, and Kadin Riggs; Rob D’Arcy, Randy Nolan, and Juani Ferraras

  • Managed traffic using MURS radios — Akemi Riggs and Sketch

  • Ordered and funded the mega dumpster — Manu Koenig and Jillian Ritter

  • Joined us for lunch and shared NRG Firewise wisdom — Dave Ponza and Thien Mai

If I missed anyone, please email me so I can add you.

We are fortunate to have so many skilled neighbors who donated their time, equipment, and expertise. This year, we would also like to recognize and support the small businesses run by members of our NRG community.

Rick Duckart — Radco Construction
Rick installs enhanced septic systems that help protect Rodeo Creek, rivers, and the ocean from environmental pollution. He also offers NRG Firewise discounts.

Matthew Todd — (Mastication Services)
Matthew offers mastication services to NRG Firewise members at a discounted rate of $150/hour plus fuel. Mastication helps reduce fire fuels and manage invasive species. Bobcat access is required, and slopes must be less than 50%.

Ryan Meeks — Meeks Honey
Ryan’s parents, David and Alayne, started Meeks Honey right here on NRG in 1975. Their locally grown honey is available at New Leaf, Staff of Life, and Sunnyside Market.

NRG Firewise has created a wonderful community. Coming together to make our egress routes safer, test MURS radios for communication during power outages, and support one another is exactly what we need as we prepare for wildfire season.

Great job, volunteers!

Best,
Susan
