Knowing we have high winds heading our way can be stressful, but here are some helpful things you can do to protect your home:
-
Secure patio umbrellas with bungie cords
-
Place patio cushions and other flammable materials inside
-
Deep water plants surrounding your home
-
Charge your cell phones and radios
-
Sweep your decks (getting between the boards)
-
Close windows, skylights, and chimney/wood stove dampers
-
Blow debris off roof and in gutters
-
Test your generator and make sure you have fuel
-
Get Go Bags and other important items ready for evacuation
-
Get pet supplies and carriers ready for evacuation
-
Park cars facing out for easy escape
-
Trim back vegetation within 5 feet of your home
-
Remove any flammable furniture or equipment within 5 feet of your home
-
Pull out firehoses and test submersible poop pumps (if you have them)
Great time to think about becoming a Micro Community Leader so you’ll have a Dakota MURS radio to communicate during an emergency when we don’t have power. Let me know if you’d like to join us in our training session with Marco Mack.
